Self-styled "hermaphrodite twins from the future," Eva & Adele have turned their life and partnership into a work of art. The pair, who-having supposedly returned in a spaceship from the future upon the fall of the Berlin Wall-refuse to disclose their real names, ages, or origins, make appearances at galleries, fairs, and other art world events, and like their precursors Gilbert & George, "don't just go and do a performance in a gallery and then stop being Eva & Adele afterwards." Shaved heads, full clownish makeup, and elaborately feminine costumes are trademarks of the duo's identical appearance. "We are an artwork," says Adele; "Wherever we are is a museum," reads their official website. Though biologically male, Eva had her gender legally changed so the two could marry as women. "I'm neither a man nor a woman," she says, however. "Neither is Adele. We've invented our own sex."
