Old Edo period (pre 1880) Ise Katagami in excellent antique condition. The late Edo and Meiji period (about 1789 - 1912) is acknowledged as the golden era of stencil production.
This is #6 of the six katagami I am listing, so please see the others as well.

This Katagami has no silk -- the stencils made in later years were reinforced with silk threads, but the early Ise Katagami were made with more layers for a thicker, stronger paper. The patterns cut into this thick paper were self-supporting and did not require silk reinforcement.

Note: the tiny holes within the katagami stencils were used for pinning the stencil to the fabric and acted as a guide for lining up the patterns to create the final length of print.

Katagami look wonderful when framed, especially in groupings (see the other 5 I have listed)

My mother purchased her Katagamis from a reputable Asian antiques/art dealer in the early to mid 1960s -- they have had excellent care and have been stored in a flat portfolio.
