Description
Here we have a gorgeous antique French style dresser from Sligh Furniture Company which was founded in 1880 by Charles Sligh. He worked for Berkey & Gay prior to starting his own company. Sligh Furniture became quite famous when U.S presidents Rutherford B. Hayes and Benjamin Harrison each purchased Sligh bedroom suites.
This listing is for a four drawer dresser with original gimbaled mirror. The top two smaller drawers lock and the key is present. Darling fluted Frenchy legs and stunning gesso details. I find no gesso loss. Dovetailed drawers. Made in America, a lovely and rare dresser in superb condition.
I've enjoyed this dresser for many years and I also happen to have the matching full size bed too, which I will be listing shortly. The vanity has already been sold.
I was told by heirs of the original purchaser that this bedroom suite was purchased in either 1907 or 1917 (unfortunately I can't remember which). However, my research revealed that in 1910 Sligh Furniture employed the French designer Rene Guenaux. This dresser has his design influence, so I'm certain it is no newer than 1917.
Measurements are: 49 inches wide at the widest point which is the knobs that hold the gimbaled mirror. The body of the dresser is 23 inches deep, but the knobs add an extra inch. It is 68.5 inches tall to the top of the mirror.
All of the pieces came to me in their original yellow paint which was worn. I had the set painted many years ago with Sherwin Williams Classic Pro Enamel in Extra White Satin. There were a few old dents and dings as would be expected with age and use, but these are painted over and not too noticeable. The old slightly wavy mirror has some minor ghosting. Please examine the photos and feel free to ask questions... thanks for looking!
Condition:
Alterations: Original Design Modified
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: This dresser has been repainted. Very good clean condition. There are few old blemishes which are minor and have been painted over. Mirror has some ghosting, please examine photos and feel free to ask questions. There is NO missing gesso on this dresser.
