Description
Original vintage Western watercolor by noted American artist Leonard H. Reedy (1899-1956), signed "Leonard H. Reedy" at the lower left.
The evocative composition depicts a Native American rider on horseback overlooking an expansive mountainous Western landscape. Reedy uses delicate washes of ochre, lavender, gray, blue and earthy brown to create tremendous depth across the open valley, while the solitary mounted figure provides a dramatic focal point.
Reedy was a Chicago-born painter celebrated for his depictions of the American West, including Native American subjects, cowboys, horses and frontier life. Comparable documented Reedy works include numerous watercolors of approximately this same 8 * 11 to 9 * 12-inch format. Importantly, the reverse retains an original Leonard H. Reedy artist label giving his Chicago studio address at 215 East 75th Street. The piece remains in its vintage matting, which shows considerable age and wear.
