Description
Original oil painting by noted South Carolina artist Alvin Thomas Outlaw (1941-2005), signed "Alvin Thomas Outlaw" and dated 2000 lower right.
This wonderfully detailed Southern folk-art scene depicts rural Lowcountry life centered around a small wooden cabin beneath monumental live oak trees draped in Spanish moss. Figures gather around the home and yard, with chickens, a dog, cultivated fields and a winding dirt road completing the narrative composition.
Outlaw was known for documenting African American life and the rural South as he remembered it from his youth. His paintings frequently portray cabins, cotton fields, farm life and everyday scenes from South Carolina during the mid-20th century. The painting's intimate scale is contrasted beautifully by its remarkable amount of narrative detail. Outlaw's use of the enormous moss-covered trees to frame the small cabin creates a particularly strong composition. Presented in a rustic wood frame that complements the Southern subject matter.
