A substantial signed pottery pitcher and basin set by North Carolina potter Kenneth George, representing the historic Cole family pottery tradition of Sanford, North Carolina.

The large hand-thrown pitcher is paired with its coordinating basin, creating a handsome sculptural display with the warm, earthy character associated with traditional North Carolina pottery. The generous proportions and expressive handmade form give the set considerable presence, whether displayed on a sideboard, console, large table, or as part of a collection of Southern studio pottery.

Kenneth George learned the pottery tradition within the Cole family, working alongside his grandmother Neolia Cole Womack and her sister Celia Cole at Cole's Pottery in Sanford. The longtime Sanford pottery operation has since closed, making surviving signed pieces from this branch of the Cole pottery tradition particularly interesting examples of North Carolina pottery history.
