‘Twas the nightmare before Christmas,” that this wall-mounted, creepy, cartel clock prop, was temporarily, prominently displayed within a “Haunted Mansion Holiday” display of New Orleans Square at Disneyland! Walt Disney Imagineers prepared this lavish “Haunted Mansion Holiday” prop, beginning with the elegant case of large, antique, French cartel clock. Measuring 41” x 16” x 6”, the Baroque-style casework was decorated with ornate, heavy carving of partial-rococo, but mostly-symmetrical swirling floral and leaf motifs. The top was crowned with the dramatic mask of the mythological Green Man and a pair of dynamically-sculpted, ever-vigilant lion heads. Imagineers partially gutted the non-functioning timekeeper (see images), and embellished it with a rich brass-toned veneer and intentional distress. Finally, a single, “D” monogram of Disneyland was etched inside the cameo under the face. The back has rubber backs to protect the specific stage where this was displayed, and a small hand-written “HM” designating the Haunted Mansion Area. While cartel clocks were typically at home in large mansions, this one-of-a-kind stage dressing comes from a foolish mortal who brought the boundless realm of the supernatural to a nearby shop window of New Orleans Square. When Jack Skellington departed for Halloween Town, and the Haunted Mansion Holiday ended, the clock prop was retired from display. In the present, this Disneyland artifact “from regions beyond” exhibits wear and intentional “antiquing”, but is in a Very Good condition, and is a physical reminder of the unstoppable passing of time, nightmares before Christmas past and compulsory fees that all mortals ultimately pay.
