Jens Risom is widely considered to be a pioneer in introducing Danish modern furniture to the United States through early work with the Knoll company and to a greater extent through his own company, which thrived in the 1950s and '60s.

The Risom Side Chair (1943) is testament to the simplicity and ingenuity that is so often found in timeless modern furniture. One of the first pieces commissioned by Knoll(R), it brought the natural materials and understated form of Scandinavian design to large-scale U.S. production. Today, the streamlined hardwood frame is expertly joined with mortise-and-tenon construction, and the heavy-duty cotton nylon straps are tightly basket-woven across the frame for strength and resilience.
