Description
A substantial Michael Taylor Designs "Montecito" round cocktail or coffee table, circa 2000s, combining the relaxed sophistication of California design with a classically inspired architectural metal frame.
Designed for use indoors or outdoors, the table is constructed from solid aluminum with a rich dark oiled-bronze finish. Its open framework gives the generous 47.5-inch-diameter table a surprisingly light visual presence, making it particularly suitable for large seating arrangements without overwhelming a room or terrace.
The circular frame is supported by four slender legs embellished with classically inspired acanthus details and spherical ball finials. Gracefully curved metal braces connect the legs below, creating an elegant organic rhythm when viewed through the transparent glass top.
One of the table's most distinctive details is its custom-cut circular glass top. Rather than simply resting above the frame, the glass has been precisely shaped around the four projecting decorative finials, integrating the glass into the architecture of the base. The substantial approximately 1-inch-thick glass has a beveled edge, reinforcing the quality and scale of the piece.
The table measures 47.5 inches in diameter, providing an excellent surface for a large living room, covered loggia, pool house or Mediterranean terrace. The glass surface stands approximately 23 inches high, while the decorative metal finials rise to approximately 25 inches.
Michael Taylor's celebrated California aesthetic was built around an effortless relationship between interior and exterior living, combining classical references, generous proportions and durable materials with an informal sense of luxury. The Montecito collection embodies that approach particularly well and works comfortably in California Modern, Mediterranean, Organic Modern, Neoclassical and contemporary interiors.
This example retains its original character and finish. The metal shows expected cosmetic wear and variations to the bronze-colored surface consistent with use and age. There are no reported structural breaks, repairs or damage. The glass has some light surface scratches consistent with use.
A particularly versatile designer cocktail table, it would work beautifully in a sophisticated indoor living room but is equally compelling on a covered terrace, loggia or other appropriate outdoor entertaining area.
