Height:6cm(2.36in), Width:14cm(5.51in)A Tang?dynasty marbled?clay ceramic pillow in waisted form, modelled with imposing lion heads at both ends with forceful, deeply carved features. Executed in sophisticated marbled?clay technique, green and brown clays are twisted together to form continuous flowing wood?grain?like patterns running through the whole body. Vent holes pierce the upper surface. The glossy glaze is covered with fine craquelure. Marbled ware represents highly demanding Tang ceramic craftsmanship. The twin?lion motif carries auspicious connotations for warding off evil spirits, making this a rare surviving example of Tang marbled pottery.
