Historical Context
The Art of Lithography
Lithography, invented in 1796 by German author Alois Senefelder, revolutionized the world of printmaking and democratized art reproduction. This planographic printing process, based on the chemical repulsion between oil and water, allowed artists to draw directly onto limestone or specially prepared plates with greasy crayons or ink. The technique enabled unprecedented detail and tonal variation, making it the preferred method for reproducing paintings and creating original artistic works throughout the 19th century.
By the 1840s, lithography had gained tremendous popularity in England, where it flourished as both a commercial and artistic medium. British publishers used lithographs to document English life, from coaching scenes to sporting events, creating an invaluable visual record of the nation's social customs and daily activities.
About "All Right" and C.C. Henderson
The original painting "All Right" by C.C. Henderson captures the quintessential English coaching spirit of the 1840s, when stagecoach travel was the primary means of long-distance transportation across England and the British Isles. The title "All Right" was a common cry from English coachmen and passengers, signaling that all was well and the journey could continue safely.
C.C. Henderson (Charles Cooper Henderson, 1803-1877) was a renowned British painter celebrated for his detailed depictions of English coaching scenes and sporting life. While the current location of the original "All Right" painting is unknown, Henderson's works are held in various British museums and private collections. His collaboration with engraver J. Harris resulted in prints that not only served as popular decorative pieces but also as historical documents of English social life and transportation.
The golden age of English coaching (roughly 1780-1840) represents a romantic period in British history, when elegant mail coaches and passenger vehicles connected cities and towns across the countryside. These coaches, pulled by teams of carefully bred horses and driven by skilled coachmen, were symbols of English efficiency and social refinement.
