Description
Playful depiction of Mont-Saint-Michel by Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947). Loose and heavily textured, this piece focuses on light, shadows, and shapes, rather than realistic depiction. Blocky geometric shapes create the iconic outline of the abbey and its reflection. To the right of the composition, a flock of abstracted birds fly above the water. The paper is mounted on a piece of foamboard so that it "floats" above the matboard.
Titled "Mont-Saint-Michel" in the lower left.
Signed and dated "Grant 2005" in the lower right.
Acquired with a collection of other Grant pieces.
Presented on blue matboard.
Paper size: 25.5"H x 36.5"W
Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) is an artist from San Diego, CA who began showing his art at 13 years old. This led to becoming San Diego Museum's Art Guild's youngest member. He attended San Francisco State University in 1965 to study printmaking under John Ihle and Dennis Beal. Throughout college, Marc taught silk screening classes in his Potero Hill painting studio and worked at Museum West-an arm of New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Later he became the Display Director at Design Research International. He later attended the Brighton School of Art and Design in England for graduate work in printmaking.
