Description
Whimsical and vivacious limited editions screen-print on paper depicting a smiling nude figure lounging on a beach next to a fantastical orange and purple striped iguana, with volcanos erupting in the distance and several airplanes flying through the night sky by Phoebe Cole Gordon (American, 1955-2017). Titled and signed lower right "8/60 Blue Lagoon Phoebe Cole." Presented in a silver metal frame and plexiglass. Image, 21"H x 29"L.
Phoebe Cole Gordon was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1955 and soon went on to get her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking at Oregon University. In 1981, following her completion, Gordon produced multicolored linoleum cuts and sold them to galleries around the United States. Gordon's prints were exhibited widely during the 1980s and 1990s, and soon after, she moved on from printmaking to creating papier-mache altarpieces and dioramas, which were featured in two solo exhibitions in San Francisco in 1990 and 1993. From 2008, she created ceramic sculptures, acknowledging the influence of Mexican folk art and making Day of the Dead pieces. Her works are held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, and the Portland Art Museum.
