A compelling piece of art, this dark, somber nude is the product of Janina Domanska (1913-1995), a Polish Concentration Camp survivor, who is best known as a Caldecott Medal recipient for authoring and illustrating children's books in the 60s and 70s. This particular piece was painted in Rome before Domanska immigrated to the U.S. in 1952. Originally purchased from a private estate in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Condition Notes: The canvas is foxed on back and though tight for the most part, it does exhibit denting above right shoulder and left upper arm. The canvas edges were covered with book binding tape, but some is missing on bottom and half of left side. Small area where paint has pulled from canvas left corner (see pic). It has never been framed.
