LARGE Oil on canvas, signed JF Slater 1904, original gilt frame
This splendid piece by Northumbrian painter John Falconar Slater (England 1957-1937) is an arresting glimpse of pastoral life in Northumberland that appears untouched by the encroaching Industrial Revolution. The painting attests to Slater's mastery at expressing the beauty and mood of a landscape through the rendering of exquisite color, natural light and convincing atmospheric effects.
John Falconar Slater was a renowned British landscape painter and one of the first artists in England to adopt Impressionistic painting techniques. Slater was born and died in the county of Northumberland, England, situated on the Scottish border. The region's wild beauty, diverse scenery and rich history inform Slater's awe-inspiring Romantic landscapes. There are 37 paintings by Slater in the British National Art Collection.
