Description
"Sprout", A limited edition etching (#6 of 15 from 1967) by noted and important Japanese artist Toko Shinoda born in 1913.
Ms. Shinoda passed away in a Tokyo hospital in March of 2021 at the age of 107. She is widely regarded as possibly the most important artist of the 20th century in Japan and is in major museum collections around the world. She worked with the century's old tradition of sumi ink on her paintings and prints. In a 1983 article in Time Magazine, they asserted "her trail blazing accomplishments are analogous to Picasso". Her art merged traditional calligraphy with abstract expressionism, and she was noted as the foremost calligrapher of the 20th century.
Residing in New York in the 1950's after an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art she came to know Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and other luminaries of the abstract expressionist movement.
The work for sale here is emblematic of her elegant, minimal, and very, very composed style. A collectors piece.
