Description
This Jimmy Lee self portrait is from the 1980's. It's from my personal collection and I purchased from another collector in 1993 and has been hanging in my study ever since. I don't use the term often but this is a Masterpiece example of an early self portrait from Jimmy Lee Sudduth. Mixed media painted with mud, paint and vegetable matter on 1/2 inch found plywood and mounted in original frame from the 80's. Jimmy Lee on the farm with a bluegrass instrument! The painting is 30" x 42" unframed and framed 33.75" x 46".
From NY Times:
A self-taught artist, Mr Sudduth was renowned for the effect he could produce with his own homemade paint, which consisted of Alabama mud blended with a variety of common substances- soot, axle grease, sugar, coffee grounds and much else- to lend color and texture. Many applied and worked with his fingers.
His art is in permanent collections including the Smithsonian Institution, the High Museum of art and the Montgomery Museum of fine Arts as well as many others.
Writing in the New York Times in 1997 Michael Kimmelman reviewed an exhibition at the Schomburg Center for research in Black Culture that included Sudduths paintings. He described them as a''pictures of improbable chalky luminosity and understated bliss'.
