Description
Here he is, the legendary American Romantic poet, as those across the pond, specifically caricaturist "T" (Theobald Chartran), saw him in his day. He certainly looks to be quite a robust fellow, hardly the stereotypical image of a poet. He actually looks a little bit wild-eyed, like the abolitionist and reformer he was.
The original Vanity Fair was a British weekly magazine published from 1868 to 1914. The Life magazine of its day, perhaps, it offered its readers articles on fashion, current events, the theatre, books, social events and the latest scandals. Most issues featured a full-page, color lithograph of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today.
