Description
Vintage Framed Art Print of 1870 Painting "The Bear Dance" by Wiliam Holbrook Beard
William Holbrook Beard (1824-1900) was best known as an allegorical painter; and his satirical paintings are generally known for his depiction of bears, cats, dogs, horses, and monkeys with some human occupation and expression. He was a well-known artist in New York in the nineteenth century. He first exhibited in the National Academy Of Design in 1858 and was elected to the National Academy in 1862. He was noted for his originality and imagination, and his works were very popular and greatly reproduced. "The Bear Dance" depicts an exclusive party at a clearing in the woods; but its alternative titles, "The Bears of Wall Street Celebrating a Drop in the Stock Market" and "The Wall Street Jubilee", reveal the allegorical meaning.
The print is approximately 30 inches by 19.5 inches. The frame is approximately 40.5 inches by 28.5 inches by 1 3.8 inches. It is in very good vintage condition with only minor imperfections consistent with age. Please note the glares in the clear cover over the print make it difficult to produce a good clear picture of the print, so we have included a stock photo of the print without any glare. Please examine the photos for detail. Photos of the frame and print are part of the description.
