Description
First Sudduth I ever purchased. Work done in circa 90's. Painting came with rustic wood matting and frame. Piece originated from Dr. Kurt Gitter one of the early collectors and dealers of Folk and Outsider Art. Short story was in Atlanta maybe 15+ years ago and randomly met Dr. Gitters son. We talked and I was describing the first Sudduth I purchased, the piece listed above that his family had owned and he asked if I wanted to sell!
From the book "The Life and Art of Jimmy Lee Sudduth"
Jimmy Lee Sudduth from Fayette, Alabama was one of the "elder statesman" of Black Folk Art in America. His paintings are distinctive, created primarily from various colors of clay that he dug from earth and refined, mixing them with sugary liquids to solidify them and blend them to the support etc..I will include a copy of the book with the sale of this painting.
