Description
A monumental Continental (likely Italian) convex curved hand painted architectural wall panel from the 19th century.
Impressive large size, standing over eight feet tall by five feet across the very large work is a true statement piece.
The magnificent painting in Grottesca Neoclassical style, elaborately decorated, with nods to period Art Nouveau taste, richly detailed, floral, scroll, shell and building element motif. Bold, vibrant polychrome decoration embellished with decadent laurel leaf ornamentation and corner medallion, gold and deep red accents, framed by later giltwood curved frame.
The grotesques are a particular type of wall painting decoration, which has its roots in classic Roman painting of the Augustan era and which was rediscovered and popularized in Medieval Renaissance Italy starting from the end of the fifteenth century.
