THE STORK CLUB/WINCHELL AND RUNYON. Two original/vintage 8" x 10" undated publicity photographs featuring Walter Winchell (who famously dubbed the club "New York's New Yorkiest" place), journalist and Broadway short story writer Damon Runyon, and actor Mike Todd, with another man, in discussion and writing notes. Condition: both good. TOGETHER WITH AN ACS RECEIPT: A receipt from the New York City Committees of The American Cancer Society, Inc., dated April 7, 1948. Acknowledgment of a $250,000 donation; addressed to Attn: Mr. Walter Winchell, The Damon Runyon Memorial Fund for Cancer Research, Inc. & Irving Trust Company, New York. Winchell and Runyon grew close towards the end of Runyon's life, when he was ill from cancer and unable to speak, communicating through "scribbling notes on a pad" (Neil Gabler, in Winchell, 1994:347). Both drifting and lonely at this period, with Walter describing Runyon in 1945 as being promoted to the role of "last man to leave the Stork Club," the two met every night in the Club Room, sat with old friends, then headed out together to chase police calls (Gabler 1994:348). Following Runyon's death in 1946, Winchell established The Damon Runyon Memorial Fund charity, with the first major donation of $250,000 going The American Cancer Society (Gabler 1994:351). PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
