[LINDBERGH CASE/CRIMINAL PSYCHOLOGY; WALTER WINCHELL.] DUDLEY D. SHOENFELD (1893-1971). A single-page typed letter signed by Dr. Dudley D. Shoenfeld, 116 West 59th St., dated September 29, 1934. Addressed to Walter Winchell at The New York Daily Mirror. 8 1/2" x 5 1/4" (matte 11" x 8 1/4"). Condition: the letter has been laid down on cardboard, the glue (now yellowed) was brushed over the edges and more substantially across the bottom margin; fold creases. In this letter, Shoenfeld is writing after a series of breaks took place in the case (September 15-24, 1934). He writes to Winchell, in part: "I deeply appreciate the ethical manner in which you made reference to me in your column Thursday morning. I must confess that I have felt ill at ease in the past week at the possibility of receiving some degree of publicity in the Lindbergh case. All medical men shudder at the thought." Dr. Shoenfeld wrote a groundbreaking psychological criminal profile in November 1932, which posited that the Lindbergh baby's killer was an amateur acting alone (considered one of the earliest criminal profiles). His 1936 book, The Crime And The Criminal: A Psychiatric Study of the Lindbergh Case, presents his detailed analysis. PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
