In the introduction, Harvey W. Wiley opines: "The author has done a very fine thing... Too long we Americans have been sulking, like the small boy, because we couldn't sup the nectar of 'forbidden fruit.'" MacDougall was a New York business woman, coffee wholesaler, and restaurateur.
