WALTER WINCHELL AND NEW YORK FIRE COMMISSIONER EDWARD F. CAVANAGH JR. Three original/vintage press photographs of Winchell and Cavanagh at the scene of the Wanamaker Department Store building fire (July 16, 1956), the fire chief in formal wear. The massive fire led to extensive subway flooding. Each approx. 9 1/2" x 7 1/2", laid down on cardboard. Condition good overall, some edgewear. TOGETHER WITH: Publicity photo of Winchell announcing/on stage at a NY Fire Department event (possibly related), with firefighters and national anthem singer. 10" x 8." Overall good condition. Edward F. Cavanagh Jr. (1906-1986) served as New York Fire Commissioner 1954-1961, and was later Deputy Mayor under Robert F. Wagner Jr.'s third term. The June 19, 1986 New York Times obituary for Cavanagh (newyorktimes.com), described him as an innovator who initiated programs of field inspection and public awareness, and notes that he coined the term "Hell's Hundred Acres" to refer to the flammable lofts of SoHo. PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
