[LINDBERGH CASE; WALTER WINCHELL.] DAVID THEODORE WILENTZ (1894-1988). An original/vintage signed/inscribed photo portrait of Wilentz, the dapper Attorney General of New Jersey (1934-1944). 9 1/4" x 7" (sight); 13 1/4" x 10 3/4" (frame). Inscribed in white on the image: "To the 'Arc of No Triumph' / From the Constable / Dave Wilentz." Condition: appears good (not examined out of frame). Wilentz successfully prosecuted Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., in the "trial of the century," although he had no prior experience trying criminal cases. At the time of the trial (as related in Neil Gabler's Winchell) Walter Winchell said in his broadcast: "That spellbinding 40 minutes late Friday afternoon will never be forgotten by those of us who were there...," referring to "the fury and fire" of Wilentz, who seemed to be "representing civilization" as he confronted the defendant with "hard, stubborn facts" (Gabler 1994:212). PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
