Artist: Eddie F. Stewart (20th Century). Three circa 1940s-1950s original illustrations/comic panels, ink and color pencils on board: 1.) "From Bad To Verse!" depicting Hirohito, Hitler, and Churchill as zoot suit characters; signed Eddie Stewart lower right; 15" x 9 1/2." 2.) "Flo" and "Jo" the Flagpole Sitters; signed Eddie Stewart lower left; 14" x 11." 3.) Portrait of a blue-eyed man; circa 1957; signed E.F.S.; 13 1/2" x 10 3/4." Eddie F. Stewart was possibly a freelance, uncredited comic/pulp illustrator, or produced these pieces as a sideline. He appears to have been a friend of Walter Winchell's, as Winchell had multiple of the illustrated boards with his papers. Among them were menu/city guide designs, that suggest Stewart circulated in the mid-20th century New York Stork Club/nightclub scene. PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
