JOHN EDGAR HOOVER (1895-1972). A single-paged typed letter signed by Director J. Edgar Hoover on Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice letterhead; addressed to Walter Winchell, at 115 Central Park West, New York City, October 5, 1935. 9" x 6 1/2" folded. Condition: Good; loose with frame/no glass; center fold crease; toning to edges/margins; light soiling. Hoover writes, in part: "I want you to know how much the representatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation appreciate the interest which you have manifested in them, particularly in connection with advocating the passage by Congress of a bill granting compensation in the amount of $5,000 to the widows of the five Special Agents of the Bureau who lost their lives during the past two years in the line of duty." Likely referencing gangster killings of Special Agents in 1934-1935, including members of Melvin Purvis' "Dillinger Squad": Nelson B. Klein; Carter Baum, Samuel P. Cowley, and Herman E. Hollis. TOGETHER WITH: A Chicago American City Edition headline clipping, "Winchell Reveals Purvis to Resign," July 12, 1935. 3" x 17" (frame 6" x 19 3/4"). The headline referring to Special Agent Melvin Pervis, head of the Chicago Bureau of Investigation, who became known as "The Man Who Got Dillinger." Purvis' success and renown led to conflict with Hoover, who sabotaged his career. AND: Three copies of an issue of Broun's Nutmeg, Heywood Bround's weekly, September 2, 1939, Vol. 3, No. 15.; featuring article by Broun on: "The Inside Story of Lepke and Mr. Walter Winchell." Toned, edges crumbling. PROVENANCE: THE HAROLD A. LAYER COLLECTION. From The Walter Winchell Files, Butterfield & Butterfield, 1990/91.
