Description
A wonderful example of 19th-century English sporting art, this antique hand-colored engraving depicts a traditional fox hunting gathering in the British countryside. Crafted in England circa 1880, the large print, titled "The Bury Hunt," is presented under glass in a decorative burlwood frame accented with contrasting black molded borders.
The detailed composition captures a large gathering of gentlemen on horseback, dressed in traditional hunting attire with tall black hats and colorful riding coats. The mounted riders are accompanied by an impressive pack of foxhounds, gathered along a country road in preparation for the hunt. The scene unfolds against a picturesque landscape of rolling hills, mature trees, and lush vegetation, reflecting the longstanding tradition of fox hunting among the British aristocracy.
The engraving features delicate hand coloring in soft greens, browns, yellows, and muted earth tones, bringing depth and character to the horses, riders, and hounds. Beneath the composition, the original inscription reads "The Bury Hunt," accompanied by a decorative coat of arms and a dedication to Edmund Grundy, Esq., of Bury, Lancashire. The work credits C. Agar as the painter, J. Maiden for the animals, and F. Bromley as the engraver, adding historical interest to this traditional English sporting scene.
The antique engraving is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with some age-related foxing and discoloration visible in the margins. The burlwood frame retains a rich, warm patina, and the reverse is fitted with a protective backing and hanging wire for easy installation. A wonderful addition to a study, library, ranch, or hunting lodge.
