Description
This original 1809 engraving depicts Apollo Citharoedus, the Greek god of music, poetry, and light, shown holding a cithara, an ancient stringed instrument associated with harmony and divine inspiration. The piece is inscribed "MARBLE SIZE OF LIFE - EARL OF EGREMONT" and was published in London by T. Payne, a known figure in early 19th-century print publishing.
The print belongs to a collection associated with George O'Brien Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont, a prominent patron of the arts. Works in this series were created to document and disseminate images of classical sculptures for educational and decorative purposes.
Apollo Citharoedus, as a motif, symbolizes artistic refinement, music, and Apollo's leadership of the Muses. The engraving reflects the neoclassical interest in Greco-Roman antiquity and academic study of classical form.
Presented in a silver-toned metal frame with orange matting and glass, this antique print is a fine example of early 19th-century neoclassical printmaking, ideal for collectors of classical art, antique engravings, or mythological subjects.
