English 18th Century Sporting Stonebow (Bullet Crossbow) with Built-In Gaffle. An unusually complete English sporting stonebow featuring a finely shaped hardwood gunstock-form tiller, steel bow, brass rolling-nut mechanism, sighting elements, and its distinctive built-in articulated gaffle cocking lever, neatly housed along the top of the stock. Designed for firing round pellets or balls rather than conventional bolts, stonebows were specialized sporting arms used primarily for target shooting and small-game hunting. The survival of the elaborate cocking assembly makes this an especially desirable and remarkably complete example. Condition: Good antique condition with attractive age patina. Steel components show expected oxidation, pitting and wear consistent with age. Mechanism not tested for function. Dimensions: 30 3/8 in. long x 27 5/8 in. wide.
