Description
Cased Pair of Liege Central Box-Lock Flintlock Pistols with Fixed Cannon Barrels and Miniature Four-Sided Stiletto, Late 18th Century. Rare Liege cased defensive garniture comprising a matched pair of flintlock pistols with distinctive central box-lock mechanisms and fixed cannon-form barrels, accompanied by a miniature four-sided stiletto. The pistols are particularly distinguished by their finely engraved steel actions and superb walnut grips, deeply relief-carved with bold rococo floral and scrolling foliate ornament. The purpose-fitted miniature stiletto retains a dark grip and elaborately relief-decorated metal mounts with floral and foliate motifs closely resembling those found on the pistols. Its matching decoration and precisely fitted position within the case suggests that it was intended as an integral component of the original garniture. Presented in its original fitted wooden case with red upholstered interior and oval brass escutcheon to the lid. The surviving period fitted compartments precisely conform to the pair of pistols and the miniature stiletto. The remarkable combination of matched central box-lock pistols, fixed cannon barrels, exceptional relief-carved grips, purpose-fitted four-sided stiletto, and original fitted case makes this a particularly rare and visually compelling gentleman?s travelling defensive garniture of the late 18th century. Dimensions: Pistols: 6in. overall; barrels 1 1/4in. Stiletto: 5 5/8 in. overall; blade 2 3/4 in.
