Description
Up for sale is this beautiful engraving, one of a series of forty-two double-page engravings that were published by William Cavendish in the 1700 edition of his "Methode et Invention Nouvelle de Dresser les Chevaux" and described as "among the most beautiful to ever grace equestrian literature". William Cavendish, Duke of Newcastle, was a Royalist living in exile in Belgium, where he opened a riding school. This woodcut engraving, made after a design by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, depicts one of the stages Cavendish and his assistant Captain Mazin employed in training horses in complicated maneuvers. It is one of four framed engravings from this volume that we are currently selling. Measuring 21" x 18 3/4" overall with an image size of 14 1/8" x 12 3/8", it is framed in wood and in very good condition with age toning commensurate with age and missing the upper left corner, as pictured.
