The Lochheed L1011 Tri-Star was a medium to long range wide body three engined aircraft designed to compete with the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. It was designed to be exclusively powered by the Rolls-Royce RB211 Advanced turbofan engine. Unfortunately the delays in development of the RB 211 nearly led to the demise of the aircraft, delaying its entrance into service. It was smaller than the 747 and its true competitor was the DC-10. Although more advanced than the DC-10 it was outsold by its competitor and was the last civil airliner built by Lockheed. Lockheed L 1011 was delivered to British Airways on the 21st of July 1979. The model was made by Westway Models in the late 80s and is displayed in “Landor“ British Airways livery, a livery which ran between 1984 to 1997. Westway Models was based near London, England. It started in the latter part of the 1940s and until its closure in 1998, it was the oldest aviation model maker in Europe.
