Description
Charles Gordon Cutler (American 1914-1974)
Untitled
Tropical hardwood
Signed to underside "C. Cutler"
A striking MCM nude sculpture by noted artist Charles Gordon "Chuck" Cutler (1914-1971), son of famed painter and color theorist Carl Gordon Cutler (1873-1945).
Born in Massachusetts, Chuck was educated at the Boston School of Fine Arts, and found his calling as instructor and director at the Art Academy of Cincinnati (Ohio).
This post-war tenure allowed his collaboration with the likes of Arthur Helwig, Paul Chidlaw, Charley Harper, Noel Martin, and Julian Stanczak, during one of the more exciting and creative artistic periods in history.
Known for his works both in wood and stone, Chuck was revered in the Academy as the "burly rebel with a chisel".
This fluid beauty in solid rosewood appears to depict a shapely female caught pulling a garment over her head. Her 36" stature is impressive, but unimposing.
This lovely piece would be at home on the floor, as a centerpiece, or upon a mantle.
Estimated period 1940s-1960s, and bears the carved inscription on bottom: "C. Cutler".
