Description
A charming example of 19th-century Belgian animal painting, this antique oil on canvas depicts a colorful barnyard scene featuring a proud rooster surrounded by four hens. Crafted in Belgium circa 1890, the large painting is presented in its original carved giltwood frame, richly decorated with floral and foliate motifs.
The composition centers on a magnificent rooster displaying vibrant golden-brown plumage, a bright red comb, and iridescent black tail feathers. Around him, four hens in shades of white, brown, and black gather near a shallow feeding dish. Each bird is rendered with remarkable attention to detail, from the delicate texture of the feathers to the natural postures and lively expressions. The scene unfolds beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky, with lush greenery and a distant countryside landscape providing depth and atmosphere.
The painting is signed H. Schouten in the lower right corner. Henry Schouten (1857-1927) was a Belgian artist celebrated for his realistic depictions of animals, particularly poultry, cattle, horses, and rural landscapes. He studied at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts from 1876 to 1881 and was influenced by renowned Belgian animal painter Alfred Jacques Verwee. Known for his naturalistic compositions, detailed brushwork, and sensitive portrayal of animal life, Schouten remains appreciated by collectors of European animal paintings. The artist is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists, with a biographical and auction reference attached to the reverse of the painting.
The antique artwork is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with fine age-related craquelure, rich colors, and wonderful details. The substantial giltwood frame retains its beautiful aged gold leaf finish, complementing the painting's warm tones. A wonderful addition to a country home, ranch, hunting lodge, or traditional interior.
