Description
A timeless Chinoiserie pagoda-form wall etagere by Union National Furniture. Finished in matte black with hand-painted gilt decoration, the shelf features a deeply ribbed pagoda canopy with scalloped edging and a spherical finial, three open shelves above a fourth display level, and a discreet lower drawer.
Smooth columnar supports are joined by gilt collars and square decorative blocks painted with stylized botanical and sunburst motifs. Additional hand-painted foliage embellishes the canopy apron, drawer front and lower corner blocks. The open architectural form is exceptionally decorative while remaining practical for displaying small ceramics, framed miniatures, books and collected objects.
Union National of Jamestown, New York, was known for its finely made, solid hardwood case furniture and elaborate Chinoiserie designs throughout the mid-to-late 20th century.
Substantial, sturdy and surprisingly heavy for its scale. Original metal mounting brackets are present on the back. Professional wall installation with hardware appropriate for the wall type is recommended.
A distinctive accent for a library, living room, entry, powder room or above a narrow console.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Very good vintage condition with a sturdy, stable structure. Scattered light scratches, rubbing and small areas of wear to the black and gilt-painted finishes are consistent with age and use. Additional surface wear and old mounting marks are present on the back.
