Marked "Austria" on the underside, this piece exemplifies the unique artistry and quality of early 20th-century Austrian bronze work.

Cold-painted bronze sculptures gained immense popularity in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Franz Bergmann being a notable pioneer in the technique. Known for capturing animals and whimsical figures in bronze, his works were often brightly colored with a technique called cold painting, where layers of pigment were applied without the use of heat. This delightful cat sculpture is a fine representation of the Austrian tradition of detailed, character-rich bronzes.
