Antique Pencil-Signed Cecil Aldin Lithograph "The Red Lion, Banbury" c. 1923

Experience the evocative charm of the British countryside with this exceptional, hand-signed lithograph by the revered illustrator Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin. A centerpiece of his famous "Old English Inns" series, this work depicts the historic courtyard of The Red Lion in Banbury, a site famed for its 15th-century architecture. This specific example is highly collectible due to the rare, original pencil signature by Aldin in the lower-left margin, a feature that distinguishes it from the more common unsigned editions of the era. The scene is masterfully composed, featuring a graceful figure in 19th-century dress and a spirited dog-a signature motif that has made Aldin's work a favorite among canine enthusiasts and fine art collectors alike. Published by Eyre & Spottiswoode, Ltd., His Majesty's Printers, between 1921 and 1925, this lithograph represents the pinnacle of early 20th-century British commercial printmaking.

About the Artist
Cecil Charles Windsor Aldin (1870-1935) was a prolific British artist and illustrator best known for his nostalgic portrayals of traditional English life. A member of the Royal Society of British Artists, Aldin's career spanned the "Golden Age" of illustration, where he gained international fame for his ability to capture the "Dickensian" spirit of old coaching inns, manor houses, and sporting scenes. Beyond his architectural precision, Aldin was a celebrated animalier; his deep affection for dogs is evident in nearly all his compositions, lending a sense of warmth and humor to his technically proficient sketches. Today, his work is held in high regard by those who appreciate the intersection of sporting art and architectural history.

Historical Significance
This lithograph is a vital record of the "Old English Inns" project, a series where Aldin sought to document Britain's historic coaching houses before they were altered by modern development. The Red Lion at Banbury, highlighted here, is noted for its perpendicular style of English architecture, and the original descriptive series label on the reverse of this frame provides fascinating context regarding the 15th-century gateway. Printed during the interwar period, these works served to celebrate a sense of national identity and heritage. The inclusion of the "His Majesty's Printers" hallmark on the paper further establishes its status as a high-quality archival document from the height of Aldin's fame.

Its historic subject matter and sophisticated palette make it an ideal anchor for a library wall, a home office, or a curated gallery hang in a foyer. Designers often utilize Aldin's signed prints to introduce a "collected" soul into a room, as the pencil signature offers a level of prestige that mass-market reproductions lack. It pairs beautifully with leather-bound books, brass accents, and rich velvet textures, perfectly fitting the "Grandmillennial" trend of blending traditional heritage with modern living.
