Description
A finely presented pair of Persian miniature style paintings, each executed in delicate opaque watercolor and ink on paper and framed as companion works in gilded frames with wide silk mats. The two scenes depict lively courtly vignettes: one showing mounted riders and attendants arranged across a patterned landscape, the other centered on a gathering of seated figures engaged in music-making and conversation. Both compositions are enriched with dense, repeating floral motifs across the ground plane, while the upper and lower registers incorporate panels of calligraphy, reinforcing the manuscript-inspired format associated with classical Persian and Indo-Persian painting traditions. The saturated palette of lapis blues, soft greens, and warm ochres, together with the stylized figures and flattened decorative space, creates the unmistakable visual rhythm of miniature painting, designed for intimate viewing yet scaled here for striking wall display. The presence of the Phyllis Lucas Old Print Center label on the backing provides an additional layer of provenance and suggests mid-20th-century framing and acquisition in New York.
