THE STORY OF TOURMALINE
Tourmaline is one of the October birthstones and occurs in more colors than almost any other gem - from pink and red to green, blue and multi-colored 'watermelon' stones. It is durable (7 - 7.5 on the Mohs scale) and well suited to all types of jewelry. The name tourmaline comes from the Sinhalese word 'turmali', used in Sri Lanka for mixed colored gem pebbles.
