Description
This outstanding circa 1830 dark blue transfer-decorated Staffordshire pitcher was made by Joseph Stubbs of Longport, Burslem and has been decorated in the highly desirable Shell pattern. The pitcher bears two large cartouches bordered by foliate scrolls that are located on either side of the handle. The cartouches each feature different groupings of shells set amongst aquatic vegetation, all of which are set against an inky blue ground. There is also a large urn flanked by a series of flowers located under the spout. The ornate pattern includes stippled decoration and floral bands inside and outside the neck. The back of the handle also bears a floral band.
The pitcher is in very good condition and is watertight with no cracks or repairs. The glaze retains its original glossy finish and reflects light beautifully. The pitcher retains its glossy glaze and stands 6" as measured to the top of the spout and is 7.5" from the front of the spout to the back edge of the handle. The mouth is 4 5" from edge to edge and the foot is 3.5" in diameter.
This rare Joseph Stubbs pitcher would be a fantastic addition to a collection of other pieces in the Shell pattern or to a wider grouping of early 19th century dark blue transferware or can be showcased on its own. The pitcher is ideal for use at the table or can also function as a vase. A superb antique find.
