Description
Pair of Japanese export Arita ware porcelain vases of double-gourd form with cobalt blue underglaze on white ground, Edo period, 17th century. Each depicting scholarly figures amid clusters of jagged rocks and foliage, set beneath clouds and stylized tropical palm or cycad trees with dense, fan-like silhouettes. The blue and white palette, auspicious double-gourd or hulu form, and subject matter of the vases bears a strong resemblance to Chinese Jingdezhen kiln porcelain of the transitional period between the Ming and Qing dynasties. One vase with Polly Latham label along the underside.
