Description
William Daniell (English, 1769-1837). Graphite and grey wash drawing on laid paper depicting a vast forested landscape with mountains in the distance, late 18th-19th century. Pencil signed along the lower right.
Between 1786 and 1795, Daniell accompanied his uncle, Thomas Daniell, on extensive travels across the Indian subcontinent, producing hundreds of drawings that formed the basis for their landmark six-volume publication, "Oriental Scenery." Functioning as both meticulous topographical and architectural records and works of art, these illustrations provided the British public with a visual archive of Indian monuments and terrain prior to 19th-century modernization and industrialization. Daniell's work remains a cornerstone of British-Indian art history and is considered to have fundamentally reshaped European art and design, serving as a catalyst for the 19th-century "Anglo-Indian" movement across the Regency and Victorian periods.
Sheet; height: 7 1/2 in x width: 10 in. Mat; height: 14 1/2 in x width: 17 in.
