Description
Chinese export armorial porcelain tea bowl and saucer, Qianlong ca. 1745. Coat-of-arms of Van Reverhorst with coronet and crest, surrounded by smaller arms of the families Van Reverhorst, De Winter, Vereyck and De Bruyn to the left, and Schrevelius, Peenen, Groenedijk and de Vroede to the right. Rococo gilt shell and scroll band along the rims.
Provenance: Christie's, New York, "The Benjamin F. Edwards III Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, Part II," 22 January 2003, Lot 155; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff.
Reference: Le Corbeiller, "China Trade Porcelain," pg. 97-99, no. 40.
Lot Essay:
The Reverhorst coat of arms is thought to refer to Theodorus van Reverhorst (1706-58) who was a member of the V.O.C.'s Council of Justice at Batavia. The surrounding coat of arms are presumably allied families: Schrevelius was the maiden name of Reverhorst's mother, who was perhaps the daughter of the Burgomaster of Leiden, Theodorus Schrevelius, whose wife Elisabeth's maiden name was Van Peene. There were also likely family ties to the De Bruyns, who owned pieces of this set up until the early 20th century.
A plate from the same service is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Accession no. 60.149.2).
(Cup) height: 1 1/2 in x diameter: 3 in. (Saucer) diameter: 4 1/2 in.

The saucer has been broken in half and repaired; a hairline crack is visible running through the center of the saucer from rim to rim. There are a couple of very minute fleabite chips to the upper rims of the saucer and cup. Losses to the gilt decoration. Light wear to the footrims.
