Charles Townshend was the son of Viscount Townshend, who was best known as 'Turnip Townshend' after he insisted on rotating his crops and planting the unfashionable vegetable on his estates. Charles was created a baron as Lord Lynn in 1723 - the same month he married Audrey, the only daughter of Edward Harrison of Balls Park and formerly Governor of Madras. The Lord Lynn would go on to order six armorial dish sets within a decade. This particular set is well-known for its early use of famille rose in the scroll below the arms.
