Provenance: Christie's, New York, "The Benjamin F. Edwards III Collection of Chinese Export Porcelain, Part III," 20 January 2004, Lot 262; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff.

Reference: Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," Vol. I, pg. 348.

Lot Essay:
Queen Anne conferred the titled "Office of Auditor of the Land Revenue" for life to William Lowndes, whom she regarded in high esteem. This service was likely made for the marriage of his grandson, Richard Lowndes of Winslow, to the youngest daughter and coheir of Charles Shales of London. The Lowndes of Winslow today bear the motto "Ways and Means."
(Each) diameter: 9 1/4 in.

Condition

To one of the plates there are large breaks that have been repaired: in one spot along the rim two pieces have broken off and been reattached; in another spot along the rim a large section (approximately 1/5th of the rim) has broken off and been reattached. Losses to the gilt decoration throughout. A few minute chips to the footrims.
