Description
Chinese export porcelain armorial tea caddy and cover, Qianlong ca. 1765. One side with the arms of Bromfield impaling Chawcers in the motto "In Deo Omina." The cover with a pomegranate finial and spearhead band along the rim. Floral sprigs on the shoulders and sides and the other side with a lion.
Provenance: Heirloom & Howard Ltd., 30 January 2004; The Distinguished Collection of Leo & Doris Hodroff.
Reference: Howard, "Chinese Armorial Porcelain," Vol. II, pg. 373.
The Lord Mayor of London, Sir Edward Bromfield, bore this coat in 1637 and his son was created a baronet in 1660. The title expired with the death of the third baronet in 1733, though the Bromfields of Staffordshire continued use of these arms. Philip Bromfield was a tea merchant of Lombard Street and another family member of the same name, Captain Philip Bromfield of the East Indiaman "St. Anne" was distinguished during the Mutiny at the Nore in 1797.
His family is known to have owned a service with the painting of Don Quixote and it seems likely this service was also made for the tea merchant Philip Bromfield who was the 'heir' to the last Baronet. An example of this service is offered in this sale.
Height: 5 in x width: 3 in x depth: 1 3/4 in.
