Though not certain, the service was likely produced for the 1790 marriage of William Ker of Gateshaw and his cousin, Jane Martin. A plate with a contemporary label sold at Sotheby's in 1972 and read "This plate bears the arms of the Ker-Martin family for whom it was made," eliminating the Carr families who might have laid claim to the same arms.
