Description
A highly important, scarce original pre-war Japanese woodblock print (shin-hanga) by international master Paul Jacoulet, titled "Les Papillons, Tropiques" (The Butterflies, Tropics), originally published August 25, 1939.This breathtaking horizontal composition captures a young Chamorro woman from Guam seated amidst a lush thicket of stylized tropical blooms, her gaze directed upward at a collection of detailed butterflies. The work serves as a prime testament to Jacoulet's celebrated ethnographic travels throughout Micronesia, blending traditional Edo-period ukiyo-e printing methods with a striking Art Deco fashion illustrative style. The master craftsmanship is visible in the delicate gauffrage texturing applied to the flowing folds of her vibrant red wrap dress. Hand-signed in ink by the artist with his official red Jonque (Sailing Ship) seal. The lower right margin displays the block carving mark of legendary master artisan Maeda Kentaro. Presented beautifully in a striking gallery presentation.
